Roy Keeler was born in Ndola, Zambia on November 30th 1949. He received the bulk of his education in the then Rhodesia. He moved with his parents to South Africa in 1967 where he completed his matric and then returned to Rhodesia where he joined the office of the District Commissioner being stationed at some of the most remote areas of the country. He started painting at a very young age, but became seriously involved when he was stationed in the army at Kariba. In 1973 he went overseas for a year, after which he returned to South Africa. After 5 years of city life he felt the urge to get away and moved to the Timbavati area to work for a private game lodge. In 1983 he moved to an adjoining property in order to devote more time to his painting, although he still took people on guided bush walks. One of the highlights of this period was being able to follow the Timbavati white lion pride over a number of years. After 17 years without electricity or a telephone, and having lions, leopard and elephant etc. drinking from his fish pond, Roy relocated to just outside Sabie in the Mpumalanga escarpment of South Africa.
Although Roy initially concentrated on painting wildlife, he has undertaken a number of trips to Namibia and the Karoo and it is these scenes that are reflected in much of his work today. He has a particular passion for old cars and car wrecks. He says "car wrecks in the desert make a statement about the vulnerability of a human being. The car wreck's still there but the person's gone long ago." Roy’s paintings can be found hanging in Australasia, N. America, Europe and South Africa. He has exhibited in major centres around South Africa and Switzerland.
